RX News
Welecome to The RX News, the quarterly newsletter from Renesas for engineers and everyone interested in embedded applications using the Renesas RX family of 32-bit MCUs.
Applications
Welcome to a world of extreme embedded control, processing, and connectivity ... without penalty. The RX family is a blend of the RX CPU core at 1.65 Dhrystone MIPS per MHz, a 32-bit Floating Point Unit and 32-bit Multiply-Accumulate unit for DSP, a 5-clock interrupt response, and Ethernet, USB, CAN on a 90 nanometer Flash process with no-wait memory all the way up to 100MHz.

The CPU is unleashed delivering 165 DMIPS with no waits, no stalls, no memory acceleration required, just pure predictable performance. Special attention to low power enables the RX family to consume just 500uA/MHz with all peripherals on.
The RX Family of 32-bit microcontrollers is a feature rich, general purpose MCU covering a wide range of embedded control applications with high speed connectivity, digital signal processing, motor and inverter control, and human-interface with color TFT-LCD.

Connectivity example
Following is an example of connectivity using the RX microcontroller. In this application we see the rich communication features of the RX MCU including Ethernet, USB Host, USB Device, and CAN in addition to various digital and analog I/O.
Direct Drive Display example
This example shows the power of the RX microcontroller's external DMA controller. Here we see an RX MCU directly driving a TFT display without the use of costly dedicated driver IP. Using the Renesas Direct Drive software library you can drive a WQVGA TFT at a 60Mhz refresh rate with only 5% CPU load which leaves an abundance of overhead for other I/O such as Ethernet, USB Host and Device, CAN, and ADC.
Motor Control example
Along with excellent connectivity features, the RX family of microcontrollers have specialized timer hardware design for motor control. This application example show dual 3 phase motor control with a single RX MCU. The advanced timers and multiple channels of 12-bit ADC lend themselves well to motor control and fit nicely with a wealth of peripherals including CAN.
